MDS: Felines

Felines are a common sight in most of civilization, with the common Domestic Cat being highly popular. Other varieties of Feline live in a diverse variety of environments, from the Lions of the plains to the Jaguars of the jungle. The personalities of the Felines vary, from pack hunters to solitary scavengers, but all Felines are obligate carnivores – they must eat meat to survive.

Felines will typically start combat by Pouncing at their prey, using All-Out Attack (Double) to allow them to Slam into their opponent and claw or bite at their face, skull, or neck in a single turn. Remember that Pounce provides a +4 bonus to the Slam attempt, can be used with Jumping skill, and increases reach by 1 yard.

There are two primary types of Feline – the Domestic Cats, and the Great Cats. There are many varieties of each; examples here are a single, generic Domestic Cat, and the Jaguar, Lion, Tiger, Cheetah, and Sabre-Toothed Cat.

Domestic Cat
The Domestic Cat is a small, light, but highly agile creature, and quite capable of violence. Its bite and claws don’t do much damage, but remember that non-crushing attacks deal a minimum of 1 HP of injury if the target has no DR, and many Cats will be trained enough in Brawling to qualify for the +1/die damage bonus. To create a Cat Familiar, add the Smart and Familiar generic Racial Lenses, the Stalker Role Template, and the Lesser Hardy Brute Role Lens.

Jaguar
The Jaguar, also known as the Panther, is a highly dangerous jungle predator, at home both in the trees and in the rivers endemic to rainforests. Common Jaguars are yellow with black spots, similar to Leopards, but the rare Jaguar is night-black – the Black Panther. Jaguars have exceptionally strong bites, even compared to the other Great Cats, allowing them to easily pierce thick armor. One of their favorite killing methods is to bite directly through the skull, delivering a killing blow to the brain.

Created by taking Great Cat and adding Cat-Like Reflexes, Cat’s Balance, Panther’s Footsteps, and Jaguar’s Leap and adding four points in skills. Add the Stalker Role Template with the Loner disadvantage to this Racial Template to create a fearsome predator who hunts from the shadows and treetops, pouncing down upon unwary adventurers in order to tear into them with tooth and claw.

Lion
The Lion is the King of Beasts, at home primarily on the great plains. Lions are pack-hunters – when you see one, you know that more are near. Lions can let out a ferocious roar, serving to frighten lesser animals away from their kills in order to allow the King to take his due. While still quite dangerous, Lions are also quite lazy – they’d much rather push another hunter off his prey than go on the hunt themselves, and they generally only hunt for food or to protect their territory. Lions spend the vast majority of their day sleeping – upwards of 20 hours per day – and hunt mainly at dawn.

Created by taking Great Cat and adding Cat-Like Reflexes, Cat’s Grace, Lion’s Roar, and Large. Add the Stalker Role Template with the Laziness disadvantage to this Racial Template to create the true King of Beasts.

Cheetah
Cheetahs are the fastest land animals alive, capable of running at speeds in excess of 70 miles per hour. Cheetahs aren’t as strong as other Great Cats, but are still quite dangerous – especially if they can make use of their great speed.

Created by taking Great Cat and adding Cat-Like Reflexes, Cat’s Grace, Cheetah’s Speed, removed excess Basic Speed increases, and then added six points of Running. Add the Stalker Role Template to create a dangerous, swift predator.

The Tiger is a solitary hunter, usually prowling the jungles at night. Tigers are the largest and strongest of the modern cats, though even they would rightly fear the Sabre-Toothed Cat (below).

Created by taking the Great Cat template and adding the Large, Cat’s Balance, Cat-Like Reflexes, and Panther’s Footsteps lenses and adding 3 points in skills. Add the Killer or Stalker Role Templates to create a full-featured, deadly carnivore.

Racial Lenses

2 points

Feline Hybrid (Minor)
A basic Feline Hybrid can see well in the dark, and has fur and sharp claws and teeth. They also typically have some stereotypically cat-like disadvantages, such as Laziness or a Phobia to entering water. Add one or more of the lenses below if you want even more feline-ness.
